I have mixed feelings about this book! I’ll get the negatives out the way first. For a small book this sometimes dragged! The language of the book was difficult to get used to (but considering this is a translation of Japanese fiction I should have expected this), the names of characters never stuck in my head and in the end I didn’t care a whole lot about this book.

However! Some parts I LOVED! Some chapters/women have really stuck with me, 2 in particular and the ending I liked how it wrapped up and made you view these loves in a completely different life.

Overall, it was an interesting and different read, and whilst not always enjoyable I’m glad I picked it up!

This is the story of Nishino told by the ten different women he has dated during his life. As each chapter unfolds and each woman tells their story on how they fell in love with Nishino you begin to see how lost he really was.⁣

You only get to know Nishino from the women he dates and not hear his thoughts or feelings. But from these stories you get the picture that he wants the women to love him but he is unable to truly love anyone. You see him as a womaniser and when women meet him that they are instantly attracted to him in one way or another. By the end of the story you begin to feel sorry for Nishino as his life must of been a lonely one trying to fill in the void he was missing but maybe never actually finding love and contentment.⁣

It’s a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for me as I felt there was something lacking in the delivery of this story and I wasn’t hugely invested in the loves of Nishino.

I just love reading omnibus like this. Short stories connected to each others. A perfect short and light read. Although I couldn't grasp Nishino's character very well, I'm more interested in our ten women who narrated the stories. They're different but at the same time have similarities. As usual, I enjoyed Hiromi Kawakami's writing. It's just so clean without stripping the beauty.

This is a nice book if you like character portraits and chill tellings of a random man's life.

Actually, I didn't care about Nishino at all, only about the women, who told his story through their eyes. I thought it was way more interesting to get to know them, their lives, and what they think about Nishino than to read about whatever was going on with that man.

Also, I have to admit, I really could not take anything away from this book. It was a good read and I am happy that I picked it up, but I did not finish reading this thinking about the important message this book has taught me. Because... there is no message? Or I might have missed it. Could be it, I don't consider myself particularly smart. The point is, the synopsis of this book made me think that it had some message about love to tell, but to me, that did not quite get across. Again, still a nice read, especially if you are fond of chill everyday-tellings of random people. (read in German)

P.S.: Also, there is just one scene in chapter 2 that was... just questionable. To this day, I am not sure how to cope with the fact that I actually read that. I am just confusion. :/
