The John Wayne story was bizarre and interesting, and the first story was confusing and unresolved feeling.

Eloquent, cool observations about America in the 60s but also about coming of age in America. Still striking and true.

My favorite essay was "on keeping a notebook"; it felt like such an intimate glimpse into her writing practice and connects closely to my own use of a journal and sketchbook. "How it felt to me: that is getting closer to the truth about a notebook". It's strangely relevant to this era of digital documentation (60 years later) when it's so easy to document our lives through random phone photos instead of handwritten notes. It's not about the truth at all but about a feeling, and anyways what's the point of our camera rolls full of notes except to remember something about what it was like?
