Didion is such a masterful writer, and this essay collection was excellent! On the whole, I definitely preferred the first section, “Life Styles in the Golden Land,” and in general I think I tended to like her longer pieces more, but no matter the length she is an engaging and intelligent writer. The eponymous essay was especially awesome.

Dnfed after a while, though there are countless essays of great insight within this collection I just cannot force myself to care about some Americans with nothing much to do but foolishly lose themselves in American fantasies or rather the facade of such fantasies.
I understand the importance of exploring this period in American society, the population and its loss of meaning, its senseless wanderings and the forces that eventually led a society to such a state, but I simply find myself unable to arbour any sort of interest for the great majority of the people present in it.
