I thought. It would be Interesting to read essays written just before the world erupted in 1967. It wasn't. The essays don't show much of the world's as it was. They didn't age well.
I’ve always wanted to read Didion and now that I have, I feel quite pleased with myself.
I know that she’s great at these essays but I feel like she’s so great it’ll take me a few reads to truly understand what the message is.
Most important though is her sense of setting and her character. I’m there when she talks about whatever place she’s inhabiting. I’m also there when she talks about herself.

Stunning prose paired with insightful observations. Some quite savage takedowns, so elegantly written you'd barely notice the knives. Some deeply emotional pieces, especially the ones about central California and Hawaii.
I had tried to read Play it as it Lays and didn't get along with it. I may give that another try, but will absolutely be reading more of Didion's essays.

As with The White Album Didion does an excellent job of presenting things just so. Her ability to write around the everyday and plainly apparent to make a grander (sometimes elliptical) point is top-notch, and a pleasure to read. Overall I think I prefer the topics written about in The White Album, but there’s very little to complain about here. She can be self-indulgent and, even while explaining someone’s mindset to you, a bit narrow-minded, but she is so often eloquent and correct that it’s hard to hold too strongly against her.

The more things change the more they stay the same. Loved the last piece.

"Allo stesso modo, forse, non nevicò affatto quell’agosto in Vermont; non ci fu nessuna raffica di neve nel vento notturno, e forse nessun altro sentì il terreno indurirsi e l’estate morire mentre ancora ci crogiolavamo nel suo calore, ma questa era l’impressione che avevo io, e tanto valeva che nevicasse, avrebbe potuto nevicare, anzi, nevicò."
