This collection felt like a time capsule into the 1960s, very disillusioned and a little hard to understand now, when the references mean very little. In most ways it felt like a measured love letter to California, or maybe just Californians.

Overall, Slouching Towards Bethlehem is exceedingly American and very much a product of its time (the U.S in the 60s) with some really great bits, some not so great bits and some that seemed entirely irrelevant.

Took me a really long time to get through the first part (LIFE STYLES IN THE GOLDEN LAND); not sure if I was just no longer used to reading literature of this kind, or if it was all the Californian names that meant nothing to me. I did, however, found the second and third part much more compelling. On keeping a notebook, in particular, helped me get back into journalling, although in an unconventional way.

Strange and compelling. An interesting peek into the 60's
