I would have given it 4⭐️ but just like with the rest of the books there is dialogue between characters and references that were modernized, thus pulling me completely out of the story.
There was, a lot, to this book. So let’s start at the beginning, a very good place to start indeed. So Casteel is being held prisoner by the blood queen, known as Isbeth, however I like Casteel’s nickname for her more, Isbitch. So Cas is being held by Isbitch. Poppy, Kieran and the rest of the Atlantan armies are slowly sizing control of cities of Carsadonia in the hopes of saving mortal lives and to find more Ascended like her brother Ian (RIP), however that only works for awhile because come on, we need King Casteel back. So Poppy, Kieran and the Draken Reaver head onto the road to Carsadonia to free Casteel. Well, of course it can’t be as easy as sneaking in through the back door - they have to be caught with their pants around their ankles and brought to the city as captives. Poppy get’s a look at Cas and of course he is on the brink of bloodlust but she heals him enough to get a look at him and speak to him briefly. The good times can’t last though as Poppy is whisked away and brought in front of the Blood Queen to be shown of as the Harbinder of death. All to scare the people of Carsadonia. So after some boring blah stuff, it is time to rescue Cas. With the help of a healthy Malik they get Cas out, but he isn’t completely whole - Callum (a god) stabbed Casteel so he would lose all his blood and be in a complete frenzy. So they get to deal with that trying to rescue him. They get to a safe house in the slums of Carsadonia where Casteel proceeds to feed from Poppy and then they of course have to fuck, and fuck hard because he’s still mostly beast than man at this point. So after that Reaver (love him) reveals that Poppy isn’t a god, but rather a Primal and is still going through the Culling which she may not survive. It is also revealed hat Malik was there the night Poppy’s not parents were murdered, he was mean to kill Poppy, but couldn’t go through with it. Oh yeah and it’s revealed to Poppy that the Revenant Millicent is actually Poppy’s blood sister. The creepy rhyme? Kolis. The “True King” So, trying to escape Carsadonia is again, not so easy. The Blood Queen interferes and wants Malec brought to her in two weeks time or a curse placed on Kieran will kill him. They agree, cause of course they will. Um, they complete the Joining which was intense and awkward, can’t believe I read it all. The final battle between Isbitch and Poppy was pretty epic if I do say so myself. So Isbitch cries as she kills Malec saying that it was supposed to be Poppy but she couldn’t do it because she loved her too much (ha, okay) This opens a fissure in the world trying to release Kolis from his tomb, um Delano, Emil, Naill, etc. all die… and then get brought back to life as a gift from Sera, the true Primal of Life and Nyktos he Primal of Death, Poppy is the Primal of life and Death. She completed the Culling and survived and is slowly working towards becoming even more powerful. Jada the baby Draken is still alive, not Nektas and the rest of the brigade are going to find her and Ires, Poppy’s true father. OH YEAH totally forgot that Tawney is alive and that Vikter was a Viktor as was her not father Leopold.

This book gave me anxiety, but that’s not a negative review just an internal experience about my inability to handle intense emotions lol. It was so incredibly good. The split narrative between Cas and Poppy was beautiful. The way Jennifer (can I call you Jennifer?) tied up the story lines and gave answers was great. I really loved the visuals and the POWER Poppy has holy shit. I didn’t realize there were companion books I was supposed to be reading, so now I need to read those and I need the next book to be out asap.
