So I really really enjoyed this book. This would have been 5 stars for me if it hadn't been for the flaws, there are parts where the writing is a smidge lacking, like the fact Sarah is one of the most dense young ladies with a terrible taste in men, I also saw a few of the twists coming. I state a FEW, because there were twists in this that I didn't see coming AT ALL. Maybe I was too busy being lost in the world of Amber House, from the beginning I felt like I was there, and I could see it all in my head, and I think this made the book for me, the fact I was pulled in and lost in the descriptions, the fact I could imagine it. Very much interested in reading book 2, I hope to get just as lost.
The premise was intriguing, but it had some pacing problems and would probably have been better off being plotted entirely around the mystery of the titular house and Sarah and her family's connections to it (both historical and supernatural).
Wow.
Wow.
Wow.
I was so caught up in the Amber House I had a hard time retrieving myself when I finished reading it. Now I feel like I should demand a follow up book from the epilogue. :-)
I got this ARC from netgalley.com and was finally able to devote a day to read it. You know how they say people who don't read have only one life, but people who read have tons of lives? This book makes me feel like I've lived another life. The writing is beautiful, perfectly descriptive, and hauntingly accurate. I totally got that a 16 year old was the main character. I was taken back to myself as a 16 year old and stayed there the entire novel. And Sam is such a typical upbeat 5 year old, irrepressible and enthusiastic. I fell in love with him.
The theme of the novel, that a house can hold echoes of the past, is unique, not something I remember reading before.
I will recommend this book to students who enjoy paranormal books and books about family dynamics. Oh, and anyone who has no idea what they want to read.

This is like "The Ruby Red" trilogy by Kerstin Gier mixed in with the Travellers series by Claudia Lefeve.
I did enjoy this book. However, I wasn't a fan of the love triangle. Richard needs to leave. Like, right now. That is all I`m going to say about that.
Sarah is an interesting character. She feels a connection with her brother and she also feels a connection to the house. After she moves past the 'I think I'm crazy' stage, she starts to explore a little bit more. She wants to learn about her cold mother and what happened in her childhood that made her hate her mother. She wants to learn about the history of the Amber House, but at the same time, she is really scared. Not mention creeped out. It seems as though the walls have eyes and are watching her every move. That and the fact that Jackson seems to know every single thing about her.
Overall, this wasn't a bad story. I didn't like how Sarah was always focused and worried about what she was wearing and what other people would think about her. I did like that the end caused us to think a little bit more then the rest of the story. Definitely and interesting story to check out.

This is an intriguing ghost/paranormal YA novel that was very easy to become absorbed in from the beginning. Another of my goodreads giveaways that I was more than pleased to have won. The characters are well done and the writing makes the novel enjoyable for adults and teens alike. I look forward to continuing the adventures and seeing where the authors take the storyline in the next book in the series. I definitely plan on passing on this novel to my younger niece as I believe she will be extremely delighted with the mysterious spookiness that is Amber House.
3.5 stars
I was soooo excited to read this book. Which is probably part of the reason I was a little disappointed by it. I loved the premise and really enjoyed the family history historical plot. However, I was a bit put off by most of the characters. Throughout most of the story, our protagonist Sarah acts like a spoiled brat. It's sweet how she cares for her brother...but aside from that, she comes off as incredibly selfish. Part of that is because of her mother. Although you get some explanation on why her mother is not the nicest person, she still never redeemed herself in my eyes. There are some moments that are, I assume, meant to show a little of that mother-daughter bond, but it always came off as cheap to me. These people are so materialistic that it's not even funny...

I am mind-blown. I have vague memories of when I first read this back in middle-school and they are nothing like I remember. The ending is something that I had completely forgotten about. This is a huge déjà vu to say the least. Really enjoyed it.
Interesting. I don't know what to think. It all went sidways when her little brother was "taken".
I really liked the ending twist, which moved the book from 3 stars to 4 for me. The main character, Sarah, had a little too much poor little rich girl attitude for my taste. And I didn't think the supporting characters were fleshed out enough, but maybe that will come in the second book.
