There were parts I loved and parts I wanted to yell: he’s not worth it!!!! It provided a great perspective on aging parents that I wasn’t expecting and ultimately ended in satisfying conclusion.
The only reason I kept going with this book is pride : I hate letting a book unfinished. And honestly, while I enjoyed the beginning, the character's actions from an author I thought had terrible opinion on women despite being one quickly made me want to drop the book.
But just at the end of the book (I checked and according to the kindle app it’s at 96% in !) rhe writer makes a really good point about how men use women to their own benefit, learn about life at their partner’s expense. I’m glad I sticked with it because the protagonist and her friends are not in their late thirties and I don’t think it would have made sense if they found the truth right away - that’s not how life works. Sure some parts of their thinking and some events are not flattering for women but if you read through the lines you understand that even though the protagonists present themselves as feminists they live in a patriarcal society which often leads to unconscious misogynia.
When talking to a friend about it, I said that I was shocked that such an unflattering depiction of self proclaimed feminists was disappointing coming from a woman, but in fact only a feminist woman could have written this book : it is smart and accurate. It shows that despite the beliefs of the protagonists, hey believed in the honesty of their partners, who were honests.
Her point is that the male characters are not liars like they thought and they weren't that dumb in believing them. The issue is how men are educated and more generally the problems of patriarchy and its consequences on women - and even between women and girls.
Society doesn’t think that men become ugly when aging or have an “expiration date” nor any “loss of value” on the “Dating market”, unlike women. They are not expected to be as mature at the same age. An experienced men is seen as a good thing, committing late is cool because they took their time to build a live and experience things by themselves, while an experienced women is a whore and if she is committing late it means she isn’t doing things right, or was unwanted when she was young.
The writer, by the main character, speaks about how men talk to women their age to have fun and see how far they can get in a kind of seduction game, even if it implies promising commitment like marriage or moving in together and then just leave, and repeat until they are ready to settle down for good. One of the male character agreed that at that time, they would do it with a younger woman. They get to play around with serious subject and change partner when they get bored, which would discredit any woman.
To make it short at first I thought the book was a vile depiction of women but I couldn’t be SO wrong. It is the other way round. It is a smart AND a chill entertaining read with engaging characters. It's a chill book so keep that in mind when setting your expectations, but it was a nice read and I would recommend it to committed people.

This was such a lush book to read and so easy. It was written brilliantly a paired nicely with an ending that wasn’t the outcome you’d expect but was pleasantly heartwarming.
