Wow what a book! The Darkness Outside Us was truly a unique sci-fi adventure story. I loved the main characters by the end and their journey. This book also had a lot more to say about humanity and grief than I was expecting. I went in very blind and that is absolutely the way to read this book.

TL;DR: Two boys wake up on a spaceship with no understanding of what is going on in their new world. It’s a good thing they are compatible as companions or this would be a problem.
I really struggled with this book because of some of the mental health issues. Some of the questions were interesting that were brought up aroundcloning and controlling information . However, I couldn't get passed the mental health items to give it a higher review.

I’ve now read this book twice and still don’t feel equipped to write a coherent review but I’ll give it a try. I will preface this long ramble by saying that I absolutely love this book. Adore it. It’s a book I couldn’t stop thinking about for months after my first read and one I’ll keep thinking about for months to come.
To me, The Darkness Outside Us is a love story. It doesn’t feel like it at first because it’s a very sci-fi heavy book that made me feel like my brain was gonna break at times. But really, when it comes down to it, the core of this book is a love story with Ambrose and Kodiak at the heart of it. What is it like to be in a spaceship, with no one for company but a stranger? Here you are, hurtling through space on a mission to save your sister and the only thing keeping you sane is a handsome man you know nothing about, that you didn’t even know was going to be on board with you. Do they fall in love out of necessity or because their souls call to each other in the cavernous emptiness that is outer space?
I have to say, when I read this book for the first time last year, it gave me a massive existential crisis. There were times, I felt my skin crawling and somehow that sensation didn’t go away once the twist was revealed. My re-read was different. I think knowing the plot already, let me observe and understand Ambrose and Kodiak as characters better because I didn’t have anything else distracting me from it. And I only fell in love with them more.
I can’t go in depth about their characters without revealing the pivotal twist. All I can say is that each Part in this book reveals a different side of Ambrose and Kodiak that I loved. The wasted potential, the deep love, the bouts of sheer insanity, and the contentment they found in each other’s presence. This book also raises a lot of thoughtful questions about the future of Earth, the lengths humans might go in order to survive, the morality of those decisions. There are no definite answers to these questions but they are things to ponder nonetheless, considering the state of our world. If you’re looking for a mindfuck sci-fi read with a beautiful romantic subplot, The Darkness Outside Us is the book.

”Intimacy is the only shield against insanity”
