After the discover of the homunculus Sloth, Ed and Al are imprisoned in the jail of the harsh northern command post, Fort Briggs. Major General Armstrong wrests the whole story from Ed, and agrees to become an accessory in the plot to stop the homunculus takeover of the country. This includes prying as much information out of Lt General Raven and Kimblee, the Crimson Lotus Alchemist, both of whom have come to the Northern Reaches to hunt Scar. Ed finally works out the meaning behind all of the deadly skirmishes that have broken out through the history of Amestris, and he finally understand what Hughes worked out all those months ago. Führer Bradley arranges for Winry to come to the Fort under the pretense of fitting Ed with winter auto mail, but Ed and Al know it’s to further flaunt the power Bradley has over their lives. Together with the Crimson Lotus Alchemist, Ed, Al, and several Briggs and Central soldiers continue the manhunt for Scar, but the brothers have more plans to continue their defiance of Central Command.

Ed and Al’s time in the Northern reaches of Amestris turn out to be a lot more eventful than they probably originally thought. Major General Armstrong is the complete opposite of her brother, but her men are fiercely loyal and carry out her every order with little questioning, including those she issues as part of the deception with Raven and Kimblee. Ed figuring out the homunculus master plan is a major turning point in this storyline, and things get really interesting and even more complicated from here on out.
