I love a good anthology and this was a great one. Each story has a different perspective, a different horror, a different voice. Along with monsters, we see real horrors that many Native people deal with. Loved this from start to finish

I rarely find anthologies where pretty much all the stories are solid, but this was one. Maybe it was because they were all very short, maybe they were just all written by great authors, but I really enjoyed this anthology. I'm excited to be walking away with a list of new authors to read, as so many of these stories were by folks I've never read before. Definitely a strong and well-curated collection.

WOW. this was so so good. Maybe I like horror books???? Took off half a star since i had to skip one story for graphic r*pe (Sundays by David Heska Wanbli Weiden) so if that’s something you try to avoid, skip that story as well since it’s a major theme and plot point. Definitely check trigger warnings! Such a great mix of supernatural horror and just humans being plain ol horrifying.

2,28 star avergae out of 5 for all stories, but I still thoroughly enjoyed getting snippets of various cultures and stories from authors I've never heard of. Personally my top 5, in no particular order is:

  • Limbs, Waubeshig Rice
  • Kushtuka, Mathilda Zeller
  • Hunger, Phoenix Boudreau
  • Collections, Amber Blaeser-Wardzala
  • Before I go, Norris Black

And an honorable mention to Darcie Little Badger, who wrote "The scientist's horror story", because I enjoyed her writing style here as much as I did when I read her book "Elatsoe".

Fancy a short story collection that's a little bit different? Look no further!

Never Whistle at Night includes stories from indigenous authors from all over the U.S. and Canada. These stories are definitely more "dark fiction" than horror, where they often cover topics related to everyday tragedies and generational trauma that indigenous people face in modern times, such as residential schools, foster family abuse, and racism. Only a couple of stories are more mythological. It was addressed right at the beginning in the forward that Native Americans experience real horror in the everyday, and that can be scarier than anything made up.

I really appreciated the variety of stories shared and the showcase of authors from so many different tribes. Despite this, there are many similar themes. Indigenous peoples have suffered. And they continue to do so, no matter where they are. And that's not okay! This is a really interesting way to bring attention to indigenous issues and culture.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I rarely read short story collections. If you don't mind a bit of spooky or uneasy/uncomfortable topics, I would really recommend this!

Thought it would mostly be folklore or myths of indigenous peoples, instead, mostly just stories of horrible things that happened to people
