I love the Bernard Cribbins voiced stop motion animations of the 1970s but these books are actually quite hard work. The characters have a little, but not much, of the warmth and charm the TV series managed to capture. Reading aloud to my 10 year old it's easy to drift off and lose touch with what is happening in the story. In this one Bulgaria and Orinoco go to a conference in America so are largely absent, unfortunately we hear nothing of how they got there or the adventures they might have had. However there is an environmental message that will appeal to some and my son seemed to like it anyway.
