I had a hard time rating this. It's kind of inevitable that much of it will be confusing or inaccessible - these are letters written a very long time ago, often written about people that have been mostly forgotten by history. So I did semi-skim some bits, and at times it felt like a bit of a chore.

On the other hand, I've developed an affection for Horace, for his neologisms, his fondness of the word 'literally' and his constant apologies for leaving it too late to write but there having been nothing to write about. He's something of a friend, now. And it's a strange and interesting experience to follow history's progress as it's heard by someone of the time getting contradictory and usually incorrect reports about it.

So four stars it is.
