A few thoughts...reading this in my 30s (2020) versus reading as a child.

Following the Voyage of the Dawn Treader...which is probably my favorite book of the series (The Horse and His Boy a close second?), the Silver Chair is usually a mild letdown. However, I don't mind it--I would probably rank it as #5... (1) Voyage 2) Horse 3/4) Lion/Witch and Prince Caspian (tie), 5) Silver Chair 6) Magician's Nephew 7) Last Battle)

1) Wow sexism - still thinking about the line of "men who are bossed around by the wives are looked down on in our world." yoikes yoikes yoikes. Or C.S. Lewis clearly despising mixed sex schools.
2) Prince Rilian is an ass and I am 0% surprised he was tricked into enchantment and maybe he deserved it. It doesn't appear like he has learned anything at all. I am even more anti-Rilian than I was 25 years ago.
3) Why are all the baddies evil woman? Beyond the English Friends of Narnia is there no 2D female characters?
4) Puddleglum is the TRUE HERO of this book. He is supposedly portrayed as a "wet blanket" and sort of a Negative Nancy but without him they'd all be dead/trapped in enchantment--not trusting the Lady, not trusting the Giants (GOOD FOR YOU PUDDLEGLUM), being absolutely willing to be their tour guide, pointing out that Jill had neglected the signs, recognizing the ruins of the giant city, stomping on the enchanted fire. Rilian, in comparison to Puddleglum's nobility, seems like a fancy fop. His only fault was not having enough faith in himself and letting himself by . And maybe this is me in my 30s but I'm like "Why did I ever think he was negative? He's a downright cheerful dude!" Of course...I may be comparing him to Gwystyl in the Prydain Chronicles, who barely leaves his house and seems to have some pretty severe pessimism. Puddleglum has a healthy sense of pessimism which keeps everyone alive.

I utterly adore Silver Chair. It’s my fave Narnia book aside from LWW, and I’ve read it boatloads of times. Prince Rilian is my fave character; I’ve written papers on him and just love him. If I could marry a Narnian it would totally be him (Caspian the Tenth only loses out because I would hate to break up him and Lilliandil).

There is so much richness in this story, it’s unbelievable. Theological gems, allegory like crazy...truly one of the top books of the series. Action, suspense, mistakes, success. Scrubb and Pole are so ridiculously relatable as characters. Scrubb has grown so much from VDT. What’s not to like? (I’m sure Puddleglum could find something.)

Compared to the others, this book fell a bit flat for me. It was difficult to really get into it and I wasn’t super interested until way later. The characters were mediocre at best though it was fun to see Eustace again. I enjoyed the prince’s plot twist and that final fight scene but the overall ending was a bit strange. Not my favourite in the series to say the least.

Reason (re-)read: Read aloud to my daughter

Thoughts: I forgot how much less good the Narnia sequels were. It had its moments. I did really like the character of Puddleglum.
