reflective slow-paced

Listened to the audiobook.

A bit hit and miss in terms of momentum and how engaging the story was, but I enjoyed the poetic language and keen observations.

Beautiful prose, I loved the exploration of generational trauma, but overall the book felt a little disjointed and unfinished.

This may not be an entirely fair review, as the book is interesting and well written. But there's a few pages about animal cruelty involving dogs and badgers which is very graphic and terribly disturbing. I'm pretty hardy a reader, as a rule, but animal cruelty has a very bad effect on me. Now all the beauty and delicacy of the book has been forgotten because of this little story which in my opinion is totally unrelated to the rest of the book.
For the first time in my life I feel the need for a trigger warning. I'm so disappointed. I don't want to read this author again which is a shame as she's clearly talented. Perhaps they'd consider releasing an edited version?
Let this be a warning to others of a similar disposition and I'm sorry that this review is not entirely fair: but it is honest.

A subtle book that maps womanhood through two generations—a mother and daughter—of an Irish family best know for the poet whose memory, as a central male figure, has shaped the family. Enright characterizes both Carmel and Nell beautifully. Their frustrations with each other are clear, as is the necessity of each being as they are. It was a subtle book, and thoughtful, but perhaps not enough.
