I have never read Anne Enright before, but I absolutely love her style of writing. It is beautiful and gruesome all at the same time. I really loved how she explored the idea of how a man leaving a wife affects those left behind. The book is wholesome, true, and lovely. I really loved every second of it.

some moments of really beautiful prose, and some scenes that were brutal and a little hard to get through

Can’t stand not having quotation marks for speech. Technically it works well for the stream of consciousness and rushed thoughts/life of Nell’s character, but I spend more time working out who’s talking than I do taking in the story.
Add in a tense change and punctuation change for Carmel’s POV and it was like this book was designed to annoy me. Which is a shame because I am morbidly curious as to how it all goes. But I just can’t stand it for another 200 or so pages.

I was disappointed in this book. Shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for fiction 2024 I was expecting something good. I couldn’t get it into. Perhaps I don’t have enough patience for young women who drift through life without aspirations, having multiple unsatisfactory relationships, abusive relationships etc etc. The mother daughter dynamic was fairly well portrayed and at times I did enjoy reading about the mother Carmel. The only part that felt real and engaging was the chapter about Phil which stood out for me as real and powerful although it was tough reading about the badger baiting. Overall it was mostly just boring.
