I read the graphic novel adaptation of this book to a 3rd grade class. I brought my copy of the book in to show them the original novel and they asked me to read it to them. I was very impressed with how much they enjoyed a somewhat old fashioned book. It doesn't have a lot of action and the children in the book are so far removed from what my students experience. It's almost a little difficult to read out loud because the language structure is a little different. But they did enjoy it very much and decided they liked the novel better than the graphic novel because there were a lot more details in the novel. I appreciated their response to the book. I didn't expect them to like it as much as they did.

(Although technically the audiobook was actually a BBC radio play adaptation.)

Not as good (as my memory of) Minnow on the Say, which I read as a child, but a good read all the same.

I read this book as a little girl and could not remember the title or the author for years! I just knew the skeliton of the story and that I really liked it. Now that I accidentally came across the title again, I have to put it in at once so I don't forget it again.

Written for upper elementary ages and beyond, I still found myself absolutely charmed by this sweet book. As an adult, there are themes that really strike a sweet chord with growing older and reflecting on the past. A short and sweet read that I would recommend!

This story is magical and written in the style of English children's books. At times I got confussed, but at the end I got it. An okay story, but missed something.

It grieves me to rate a middle grade book written in 1958 so low, but I just didn't like this book. When I think gardens at midnight, I always think 'magical' but this book was anything but. The problem I had with it is it lacked foundation. There was no building of the story. On one page, we learn Tom discovers a back garden that isn't there during the day then, on the next page, he's visited the garden during many seasons. From that point, the story lost me. Mainly because I didn't find there to be a story at all. I had been really excited to read this one. So disappointing.

Magically beautiful.
