Re-reading this for the setting in the fens, several decades after my first reading in library school, I found it well deserves its acclaim. Pearce writes with insight about children's secret lives and how baffling they can be to adults. The puzzle of how the time slip works is intriguing, the setting is perfectly realized, and the end is as bittersweet as you could wish. Moving and beautiful.

As a child, I loved it. As an adult, I still love it. Tom's Midnight Garden is a fantastic story. My mother read it when she was little and hunted it down in the local library so she could read it to me when I was little. I couldn't wait to hop into bed and have the next chapter read to me to find out what was going to happen next. Since growing older I have also hunted the book down and bought my own copy. Its certainly a magical story with a twist that both children and adults will love. Definitely one to remember and for me its up there with the likes of The Secret Garden, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, The famous F
ive and many other classic children's stories.

This is a book I have wanted to read for a while, but being a kids book it got pushed back a little. This is pure brilliance, I would have loved it as a 12 year old and I love it now :)
