I absolutely loved this book when I was a kid.

I thought I had read it when I was a kid. The plot and the premise are very familiar, but maybe I just read similar books. None of it rang a bell--the characters, the plot, the imagery--so I think I didn't read it or I just completely forgot.
The middle seemed to bog down and it didn't keep my interest. I skipped to the last two chapters which offered a nice recap!
One interesting thing is that at the very beginning, Tom, the main character, is sent to quarentine with an aunt and uncle because his brother has measles. The copy I read is copyrighted 1958. I forget that the measles vaccine is not that old.

As charming and affecting as I remembered from when I was a wee lad of ten or eleven. I don't know why it's only moderately well-known. It ought to be a full-fledged children's classic. I absolutely loved rereading it.
