This story is magical and lovely and written in that style of English children's stories that I absolutely love (think The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, and probably a few others I can't think of right now. It might come across as a slightly naive view of childhood, but I actually think it's pretty accurate. I kind of wish it was a little more fleshed out (a la Secret Garden, which is one of my favourite books ever and I haven't read it in far to long) but that's a minor quibble. Fantastic. The language is rich and evocative and beautiful. Plus, my edition had some lovely illustrations. Cannot recommend enough. Some children may find it a little difficult, as the language is somewhat old-fashioned (only a little) and in some places quite difficult, but I think most would find this a wonderful reading experience!

Book 3/4 for the #stayhomereadingrush finished

Always a good read.

Though the ending of this book didn't surprise me, I loved this book. If I had read this as a kid, it probably would have been one of those that I read over and over.

Tom Long is a young boy who is sent to stay with his Aunt and Uncle for a Summer when his brother becomes ill. There isn't much for Tom to do, but one night when the big old Grandfather clock in the hall strikes Thirteen, Tom goes to investigate. He opens a door to shine some moonlight on the clock........and finds a wonderful garden where there should only be rubbish bins and concrete.

Written in 1958, this was a childhood favourite of mine. I never owned a copy, but I borrowed it from the library repeatedly. I saw it in a bookshop recently and had to get it - I was worried that it wouldn't have the same magic after so long but I needn't have worried, it was just as magical, wonderful, bittersweet, and engaging as it was when I was a child.

A beautiful, gorgeous book, suitable for all ages.

Book 32/100 of 2015

this book was simply so, so beautiful..
im happy i picked it up from the school library bc the blurb really intrigued me, and i didnt even notice it was a classic when picking it up, and i dont usually read classics..

anyway it was a very beautiful book about friendship.. and Time

Cute story, that is wholesome and a bit biblical. But then this was published in 1958.

The perfect book to read when you are, as I have been, laid up with a bad cold and cough. It deals with that ever-fascinating topic, the nature of time. That which, as the book tells us, stands still only in our memories.

Charming but never maudlin, this is a book for children and adults alike. A triumph. I wish the author were still alive so I could tell her.
