An intricate, well-plotted political (fantasy?) thriller. Fascinating look at colonialism. Fast paced, exciting with an amazing main character.

3.5 / 5

OKAY. So. The thing about this book is that it's good, right? Like really legitimately good. But I couldn't make myself give it more than a 3.5 because there's just something about it. Something that's not not-good, but it's not necessarily bad. And I can't tell you what it is, because I don't know myself what it is.

Every time I put this book down, I almost didn't pick it up again. And it's not like it was boring or stupid or terribly offensive, it just didn't have that pull, y'know? That 'thing' that pulls you back into the book every time you try to step away.

Better RTC maybe? I just had so many mixed feelings and it's confusing right now.

idk how to rate this, the beginning and last third were good, the last 50 pages were batshit crazy and I NEED the 2nd book NOW but the middle? drawn out and boring

So many friends have raved about this book, and while I enjoyed it for the most part, I got lost more than once. Lots names and regions to keep track of, characters who are known by 2 and 3 names/titles, I struggled to keep it all straight. Thank goodness for the annotated map. Also the end is just too much military. It's all war councils and battles that were a slog to read. It was cleverly plotted but I saw the twist coming. Also, I didn't really like ANY of the people in this book. While it was a compelling read, it wasn't really my jam.
