Made it exactly halfway through this but cannot keep going. I just don’t have the time in my life right now with school starting back up to spend two or three hours a night with this book to make any meaningful progress. If the chapters or sub-chapters were somewhat shorter and not 70 pages each it would help. Anyway, hopefully I can come back to this eventually because I loved the first installment.

Characters change personalities for the plot, making it difficult to care for any of them. The middle of the book feels like it needs some editing to remove about 100 pages. Got tired of waiting for a bit payoff that's still not there 500 pages in.

If you go into this book expecting the exact sequel to Gardens of the Moon, you will probably be a bit lost again. We are introduced to a whole new set of characters, aside from a handful that are returning from the first book, but we are now in a new island setting, that of the Seven Cities isles. The world seems much more brutal compared to that of the first book.
Graphic: War
Moderate: Sexual violence

This book is sadly all about war, and walking across the desert to save refugees from the war. War is really bad, it's even worse if you have to walk across the desert with a bunch of refugees. It didn't start out about the war. It started about people that you didn't know that were going to get involved in the war, it was interesting in the beginning parts. Though it was a pretty slow read versus the first book. Even though you don't have a lot of the same characters, it's really nice to get a more Fulsom view of the world. Get an understanding of where the gods are coming from and see how the magic works a little bit differently for each God. Overall, I hope this book leads to something interesting because this is a slog.
