Poetika

Aristotle

If you want to read about Aesthetics, you always got to start at it’s foundations. Suffice to say, given that it is Aristotle, not to mention the fact that it is the earliest treatise to focus on literary criticism, I have to rate it highly simply for its existence. It helps that Aristotle writes exceptionally well, that is if you exclude the part where he presents his thoughts on women and slaves.

At least it was a short read. I had to read this one for class, and while it was an interesting discussion of epic poetry and tragic drama, it was pretty dull. I agree with Aristotle, though; tragedy, or theatre, is the higher art form, because it goes beyond epic poetry and creates something instant, something that connects people, something brief and momentary and beautiful.

Read this one while I was waiting to get let back into my apartment after I got locked out. It wasn't my plan to get locked out, obviously. It was storming that day and my plan was to go out and catch a lightning bolt to help power my stuff cause it's always so hot nowadays and air conditioning is expensive. I was going to try and catch a lightning bolt Benjamin Franklin style with a kite and a key and I was especially hopefully cause kite technology has come so far since Franklin times and I had a golf club-shaped kite -- a favorite object for lightning to hit I've been told and also I know cause my uncle is part of the SWGA (Severe Weather Golfing Association) and he gets struck 3 or 4 times per event. But, of course, I got so excited when I heard thunder, I ran out the door with my kite and forgot the keys I needed for catching lightning and to get back in my house. By the time I got let in the lightning was gone and just stupid rainbows were left. This book was good.
