Caitlin Doughty is so knowledgeable and honest about death and the mortuary industry. Being able to learn about global death customs through her eyes was fascinating. With every destination she is both educating and guiding you towards thinking critically about how you view death, how we handle it as a society, and perhaps, plan for your own eventual mortality. I think donating myself to the body farm is top of my list at the moment.

I really want to read her third book, but am also sad it will be the last one!

i loved this. caitlin discusses and invites the reader into some truly incredible practices and gives well-deserved honor to both the deceased and the various processes/customs/traditions that care for them. i definitely cried during a few chapters. very grateful that i bought myself a copy bc i’m gonna reread it until i die, too.

Fascinating insight on post-mortem cultures from around the world interrupted by a slightly too frequent and obstinate criticism of the Western funeral industry and customs, which slightly takes away from the message that encourages to be open-minded towards and accept even the most peculiar customs around the world. Nonetheless, it was engaging throughout and seemed to be well-informed.

Just as lively, and with an almost prurient interest in the decomposition of human bodies, the author follows her survey of the US crematory industry with a selection of funereal customs from around the world.
Interesting how a culture can consider its after-life practices as sensible, but the ones of others are grotesque.

as strange as it sounds this book is so much fun and informative in the best learning way possible. it didn’t feel heavy to learn about death and how people treat their dead loved ones. it makes you think and appreciate the different cultures and how it’s important to respect each and every single one of them. it’s a very good book.
