I really enjoyed this book. Yet again, as she did with Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Doughty outlines all the various ways we could be dealing with death in the western world and all the ways in which we actually seem to make it harder for ourselves. It was fascinating to read about death and burial customs around the world, and to wonder how America could be different if we treated death as real and tangible as many of the other cultures do; if we physically washed and dressed our dead loved ones instead of passing that task off; if we valued the land and sky in which we place our dead as much as we value the dead themselves. This definitely makes me want to read up on the death and burial laws in my state so that I can be better informed-- and maybe change them so that there is more of a push towards natural burial and natural cremations as well.
