enjoyable read but I felt like it got a little long somewhere in Mexico (page 77). I had read similar fare from Mary Roach (Stiff), so it could be that I was not as engrossed as I would have been if the content was all new to me. both are worth picking up, it's just that I got to this one second.

"There's a freedom found in decomposition, a body rendered messy, chaotic, and wild."
This is a fascinating survey of global death practices and a subtle indictment of western culture's lack of appropriate death acceptance presented with Doughty's characteristic wit and charm. Her most sincere and meaningful work to date.

M- 3. Message was really just to explore and consider other death practices than the western one.
I- 4. Definitely increased my insight into western death practices and comparing them to others.
T- 4. Sometimes funny, sometimes emotional, generally positive.
S- 3.5. Well done overall, sometimes dragging with irrelevant details about her travels.
U- 3. Enjoyable and quick, overall would recommend but not a must read.

I typically don’t read non fiction but I did find this one informative and interesting, discussing death and its rituals all over the world, and seeing the importance of overhauling the death industry in the US. It did make me think of my mom who passed in August 2023. That time is a blur for me, but this book helped me go through and process my ever changing grief. Only gave it three because though informative, non fiction not normally my cup of tea but highly recommend.

Was not sure of this book about death and funerals but damn was it ever interesting! I raced through this book, soaking up all the information and experiences.
The Japanese chopstick caught me as I remember as a kid my friend's mother scolding me for passing food between chopsticks. I'm not Japanese so I asked why is that bad? She said when we die we cremate and we pass the bones with chopsticks. Also don't stick your chopsticks straight up in your food it resembles incense (also death related).
This was an oddly comforting and engaging book. I love the way she writes and I wish there was more!

A beautiful exploration of what death and grieving look like throughout the world, and a needed reflection on what's been taken from the American public because of our forced sanitation of and separation from death.
