I read this book when I was very young, probably younger than I should’ve been to be reading it at all— upon rereading it now, I found it a lot more frightening than I remembered. This is a ghost story, alright, and it does not pull its punches at all. For all the beauty of the setting (and the prose! It’s a lovely writing style!) there’s this creeping unease and sense of dread in the book that really sets up the perfect atmosphere for a story like this. I also found the plot to be genuinely interesting. A bit intense for a kids’ book, and I’m still not sure how I feel about the ending, but if you’re looking for a story about ghosts, families, and the past, this is a great one to read.

I was completely obsessed with this book when I was about 8-10 years old. I read my copy to pieces. Recently I wondered what I'd think of it now, almost twenty years later, so I got my hands on another copy. I was delighted to find that I still thoroughly enjoyed the story. I was also surprised to discover how heavily it influenced my writing.

In elementary school one of my teachers read this to us in class and I remember really being into it.

Lovely writing with enough creepiness to satisfy a horror nut like myself. I didn't quite buy Zoe's acceptance of her mother at the end, maybe because that subplot seemed underdeveloped to me. And the voice didn't ring true for an eleven-year-old -- it was pretty flowery and poetic. I enjoyed it as an adult, and I think certain [read: brainy] young readers would enjoy it...but it's pretty literary, so I wouldn't hand it to the kid looking for "Goosebumps" read-alikes. :P
