3.5 stars. this took me a little bit to get into but by the end i was sold and im so excited to what more this series has to bring. AND AAAHHH LEO I WAS SO EXCITED TO SEE HIM AGAIN.

I love Apollo so much. His voice is hilarious to me. There were so many iconic lines in this book! The one that’s popping to my mind now is from close to the beginning when he thinks something like, “Why’s everyone calling me a loser just because I’m covered in garbage?” If that’s not a king’s attitude, I don’t know what is. I love that he thinks he’s cooler than Percy (he’s not), and I love that his superpower is singing. The self-compliments were also the greatest.

I don’t know what it says about me that I love him so thoroughly in his present state when I’ve heard from a few people that they had to push through his “unlikeability” to get to whenever he “improves” in order to read this series. Apollo???? Improve??? How do you improve upon perfection???

You know, it’s really interesting to have a novel from the point of view of a greek god after having dozens of books proving how awful they are. it works, somehow. the apollo in this book completely subverted my expectations, and i actually grew to like him despite his obvious flaws. which i guess is the point of this subversion. it didn’t hit quite as hard as the rick’s other books in this universe, the stakes didn’t seem quite as high, but im still very interested to see where the rest of this series leads.
