The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan☀️
Book One: The Trials of Apollo Series🌅
4.25 Stars
Book Review - Spoilers Ahead !
My main goal for this month was to start this book series. It’s been sat on my shelf collecting dust for far too long and I really need to get through my TBR. I have a lot of work this month, so I didn’t want to read anything too heavy or serious. When the Percy Jackson season two trailer released, it drew me back to this world and to The Trials of Apollo.
Like the rest of the Percy Jackson literary universe, The Hidden Oracle has a tone of adventure and heart. Rick Riordan’s writing is witty, clever, and is one of the few authors that can make me laugh at words on a page. Our story begins at the end of the Heroes of Olympus series, well, six months after at least. Apollo, the Greek God, is outcast to a mortal body - a teenage boy called Lester. There he meets Meg, a demigod, who he is now bound to. This book follows Apollo as he grapples with mortality, isolation, and the human experience. It’s an emotional reflection on the mythological figure and is done in a light hearted way…for the most part.
I adore the little references to Greek Mythology, especially the one to Achilles and Patroclus (I still haven’t recovered from The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller). I also enjoy how this feels like a sequel to Heroes of Olympus, in some ways. There’s references to that series and a couple of characters as well. There’s one specific character that returned that has me so, SO excited for the rest of this book series. I enjoyed the newer characters as well. Meg was really interesting and I was not expecting certain aspects of her storyline to happen. I am glad we’re getting to see more of Will and Nico (I will read The Sun and The Star eventually, I promise!!).
I was a little disappointed in the villain. Nero, AKA The Beast, wasn’t very threatening or ominous. In comparison to other Percy Jackson antagonists, Nero didn’t have very high stakes. I’m hoping this is something that improves over the course of the series and we get more development or backstory from him. This is the part of the book that I felt was lacking. Other than that, this story was really great! Riordan’s nailed the narrative voice of Apollo. It feels so authentic and fun. I love that we spent most of the book at Camp Half-Blood as well. Whenever I read Percy Jackson, I think that we should get more time there before they go on quests. Having the adventure there and Apollo finding a sort-of-home at Camp Half-Blood is really heartwarming.
