Trying to catch up on my full reviews!
This book is a thriller, so I was bound to be super into it, and it’s also about a cam girl, so whenever I mentioned it to my boyfriend, I just called it “the porn book” and he knew which one I was talking about. This book had good sex scenes, the initial premise was pretty interesting, and I was obviously enthralled by the mystery element because I am super easy to please, but it ended up being a lot flimsier than I wanted it to be. The idea is that Deanna Madden, the protagonist of the book, is supposed to be psychotic and have uncontrollable urges to kill people, so she has made the rational choice to lock herself in her apartment 24/7/365 and cut herself off from human interaction so she doesn’t act on her urges (she makes an income through ‘camming’, and it seems to be a supremely lucrative endeavour). My problem is that Deanna’s ‘uncontrollable’ urges ended up actually being pretty controllable, which really lowered the stakes of the plot for me. She ends up leaving her apartment towards the climax of the story (pun intended hehehe), and it’s supposed to be this whole “wow she left her apartment for the first time in 3-4 years — will she be able to control herself and NOT murder a bunch of people, or will she succumb to her urges????? Stayed tuned!!!!” scenario, but before this happens, she has already interacted with another human being in the flesh and managed not to kill him pretty easily, so the drama just wasn’t there.
Also: I did NOT care for Mike. I hate it when the male love interest is super obsessed with the main girl. Mike is basically a stalker, but the author never addresses it, and I hate hate hate it.
