This book was a wild ride from start to finish and I found it to be far too bizarre to suspend my disbelief for it. It bordered on tragedy/torture porn where the author wrote horrible things happening to the main character just for the sake of having something shocking and grotesque happen to her. It felt more like mental whiplash than a natural story progression.

Overall, the writing style didn't really succeed at pulling me into the story the way it probably intended to, mostly for that reason. While there were a few amusing lines of dialogue here and there, it wasn't enough to make the book enjoyable for me. The characters were mostly unlikeable and the plot twists weren't very successful at surprising me because somehow I expected them before I really knew what to expect. Attempts to flesh out the main characters felt unnatural and more like an inauthentic excuse to advance the plot to the next stage. I wanted to appreciate the gesture, but it fell too flat in the end.

Even the "romance" was... concerning more than romantic at several points, but I have noticed that is a trope for this particular genre, so it probably wouldn't be very surprising to seasoned readers of FBI romance thrillers.
