this was such a devastating memoir. i loved how the voice throughout most of the story aged as the story progressed. the beginning has such a child-like voice which adds to how you feel for the author and what she went through. this was a hard but rewarding read.

The Glass Castle is one of the best memoirs I've ever read. It made me laugh, cry, and angry beyond words. One thing I would've loved to see more of is Maureen. I feel that her transition from child to adult was glossed over very quickly and deserved more explanation and detail. Still a 5-star read, though!

I would have liked more introspection or analysis from the author regarding the intensely traumatic events of her upbringing, even just to acknowledge that what was happening was incredibly fucked up. Instead it felt like she was implying that because her parents theoretically loved her and she turned out okay despite all odds, their neglect and abuse could be characterized as quirky rather than dangerous. The author obv isn’t required to dish out details of her personal trauma for her audience, but I wish she’d done something to acknowledge that what happened to her, even if she made peace with it, was not okay for her or anyone else to go through. Just super weird to have a book end with
her family giving a toast to the man who had, amongst so many other things, refused to lock or even close the front door of their house after a stranger wandered in from the street and sexually assaulted his child in her own bed

this is my second time reading this book. jeannette walls is such a fantastic writer. even though the walls kids grew up in an environment of constant adventure and spontaneity, i just absolutely despise rex and rose mary walls. the neglect and abuse they put their children through is something i simply can't take lightheartedly. erma and stanley walls can go to hell. rose mary too for being apologetic towards them and enabling them to abuse their children. it really is an inspiring story but i just can't see past many instances of neglect to consider this a lovely story of a dysfunctional family. the parents are neglectful and abusive. period.

This was incredibly hard to read. I was constantly hoping that somehow things would change for the better, but it only got worse. I'm still in shock. How can parents be so irresponsible and downright abusive? In a way it was difficult for me to understand why Jeannette Walls still loved her parents so much, but the way she described them in the books makes them seem really fascinating in a twisted sense. She never sugarcoats how their parents and other adults (and the system) failed them, but it's also very clear that she loves her parents and that she has many good childhood memories.
I'm glad that all of the Walls children seem to be doing good. I also hope that Dinitia Hewitt is okay. I only found one article online and it seemed that at the time the police in Welch didn't believe her and knowing the American judicial system I don't have much hope in her having received any justice or help.
