A salvage crew goes to the Arctic Circle to recover a scientific exploration ship that went missing over 40 years ago. They don’t expect survivors ... Surprise MF’ers!
This was a well done science-fiction, (light) horror thriller. Not so heartfelt as The Abyss. More like the campy, horror thrills of Deep Rising. It’s not ground breaking (moist, monsters in the dark). But it’s done well, even if a bit predictable.
The script, specifically the dialogue between the crew, was great. I loved Captain Carpenter. Is he a nod to John Carpenter? I don’t know. However, the entire story felt like a homage.
The art and the coloring were nice. It was cool, moody and atmospheric. And those Gary Frank variant covers ... all love.
In short, if you like a quick, deep-sea jaunt, this is a good one. I do wish it was longer. I really enjoyed some of the characters.
I read this in single issue format (1-6).

Another good graphic novel by Hill. Marine scavengers are hired to recover a boat that has reappeared decades after it was lost at sea. Survivors are found on a small island nearby, blind and not having aged in 40 years.

I am such a sucker for 'ship vanished a long time ago, it's suddenly back' horror. Combine that with gross monsters, Lovecraft stuff, zombie ghost sailors and stuff and come on! I'm all in.

Loved this, perfectly captured that 80s creature feature vibe, with a small band of characters battling cosmic evil in a hostile and remote location. Think The Thing, Predator, any number of straight to VHS B-movies, basically everything I love. There’s a character called Carpenter and ships named MacReady and Derleth, that’s all you need to know.

Holy crap! This series is incredible. The quality of the Hill House imprint has been up and down, but Plunge is an example of how amazing comics can be when done right. The story is filled with intrigue, cool characters, weird events, and some really eerie motherf*ckers. On top of that, the artwork is top notch. Every panel is beautiful. It is easy to see what is happening. The color and lettering adds to the page. This series alone makes the entire imprint worthwhile.

John Carpenter’s The Thing meets Event Horizon meets Call of Cthulhu. From a solid story to amazing art, this one checked all the boxes for me. I only wish it was a little longer!

I think this is my favorite of the Hill House collection, and I'm really hoping for a second run of comics from them, I've enjoyed the initial run. The art by Stuart Immonen was stunning, it sucked me in right away, and Dave Stewart's coloring was *chef's kiss* lovely and atmospheric. The story was good, too, don't get me wrong, but that art- swoon!
The story has a huge tsunami coming after a volcanic eruption underwater that shifts a 40 year old wrecked ship and causes it to surface. Its emergency beacon gets triggered, and a salvage crew is sent out to investigate it, along with a marine biologist and a corporate dude from the company that sent out the ship in the first place, ostensibly to retrieve the bodies of the crew if possible, as the former CEO's son was on board, and to salvage any research materials the crew had. When the salvage crew arrives, all the weird things start to happen at once, and there are some truly creepy moments, including one that made me yell "aahhhh!!!" and startle my husband. Parasitic sea worms, zombie-puppet crew of a decades old wreck, an alien presence, and some kind of magical ingot thingy that makes people obsessed with it if they look at it. The ending and reveal did feel a tad rushed, and a bit '80s horror movie, but still, it was fun spooky good times. There were a lot of loose ends left, and I'm okay with that- life is full of mysteries, science doesn't know how everything works in the universe, sometimes shit just happens and you never find out why. Overall, a very good read!
