I loved this story. It gave so much dimension to both Batman and the Joker. I loved the art of Harley and the costumes. It was so logical and interesting.

Unbelievable how fresh and cinematic this take was for Batman, Joker, Harley, Gordon, the Bat Family, the Rogues Gallery, and Gotham lore in general. It somehow builds off the mythos while weaving in all of the meta Batman criticism of recent years. Rather than refuting Batman's misguided ways, Murphy constructs an entire arc/verse where those are all valid points, now voiced by citizens, criminals, and authority figures. Batman is a rich guy that pummels poor guys who might not be criminals if they had the resources to be law-abiding citizens in a city that cares for its own. Wayne is often shown supporting charities and the gala events they entail, but there's so much less of him preventing criminals from existing in the first place, arguably because he sees crime as inevitable. Batman works with the GCPD, but he never gives Gordon the technology he himself has access to, which is already the starting point of another criticism, that the police do not need more funding, nor do they need militarized vehicles. There's a lot at play here and it all works. A fictional metropolis that's so often presented as haunted as it is sprawling is gonna be filled to the damn brim with madness and chaos, and that's before unpacking superheroes and supercriminals as everyday occurrences. I was so delighted to see such a new spin on Batman, absorbing modern critiques and giving refreshed life to the core of what makes him tick — like a time bomb.

Politically a huge mess.
Some interesting ideas that play out MUCH better in its sequel.
White Knight wants to be special and say something meaningful, but this first volume meanders and doesn't have much anything of value to say.
A strong start, a really bizarre middle, and an even messier ending.
The start to the Murphyverse turned a lot of heads because it dared to be different during a period in DC where they getting super stale.
From 2017 - 2020, White Knight really compares as much stronger material.

It's no mystery why the DC / WB bloodbaths have occurred, when this has been their golden staple for almost 3 years now.
