I appreciate how this book is divided into four sections. Each one has a distinct feeling I can't quite explain (I especially liked the second and fourth sections!), and they were each the perfect length for me to read in one go.

My favorite passages weren’t technically “poems”, so I guess I don’t really get poetry? I loved every reference to human relations with the natural world and the universe. Wonderful sentiment/belief system.

I read my first Joy Harjo, American Sunrise, during The Sealey Challenge last August, and I knew I wanted to read more of her work. While I loved American Sunrise, I think that Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings is my new favorite Harjo and a collection I look forward to rereading in the future. There is so much packed into these poems, they’re beautiful and intense, full of love and grief. This is everything I look for in a poetry collection. In particular, I found the themes of community care, justice (not as we as a society tend to really define it), and our relationship with the earth especially compelling. This poetry collection is deeply connected to nature and care and gratitude for the planet we live on.
I was going to list my favorite poems, but the list was way too long- it would have been quicker to list my non-favorites, which seems silly. Please just read this poetry collection. Please also understand that I went through and picked only my favorite, most important annotations… and ended up with 26.
Lastly, as many of you know, my absolute favorite way to read is to have a physical copy in front of me, and the audio playing- it just helps me focus and really feel immersed in whatever I’m reading, especially when I’m annotating. Well, it was such a treat because Libby had the audio and Joy Harjo reads her own collection, singing parts of it, and when I tell you that is the ideal experience, please believe me and try it out.

Beautiful collection of poems that is full of rebuke and longings, at the center the question “how to we resolve the conflict between people’s” and “if we did, what then?”
It will fill you with sadness and out you in touch with your own longings.
