Tunnelma oli kiehtova. Ajankuva hurja. Voisin lukea Ecoa lisääkin.

The eternal struggle between joy and sorrow, darkness and the light. Shadow conceals, illumination heals, but in the end does the mystery solve anything? It's all pride. Everything burns.

quality of writing: 10/10 enjoyment: 1/10 pc: 526 i genuinely thought i was going to die trying to get through this book. its fucking genius it truly is a work of art and a fantastic murder mystery book but the actual plot was such a tinY tiny part. i’ve never read a more impenetrable and dense text in my life there was so much latin in this and the language was so elevated and complicated (because it was straight out of the 1300s) some sentences went on for entire pages this shit was so complex and i fucking read the whole thing but so much of it, particularly the long philosophical debates and parts dense with historical and religious context went in one ear and out the other i truly tried at the beginning to grasp everything but it was fucking hopeless. the plot and everything was so meticulously thought out truly so so well executed down to the last detail. this book is a masterpiece and i wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

A masterpiece, really. Eco mixes a grounded, detailed depiction of life in a medieval monastery with lofty explorations both of medieval philosophy and of modern semiotics, bound together in a mystery plot whose ending is surprising and satisfying both in story and theme.

All that said, I probably enjoyed Baudolino even more.
