I had heard about this book from several sources and was really excited…. 14th century Italian monastery murder mystery? Say less! For lack of a more articulate summary this book suffered quite a lot in my opinion from the “just a man yapping a lot” phenomenon. The side plot of the multi-denominational discourse on the poverty of Christ was a slog of a few hundred pages to get through, and the actual conclusion to the murder mystery felt like an underwhelming disservice to a fairly intriguing set up. Not for me, but I learned a lot of fun new words at least.

Entertaining, well-written, and no doubt I'm a sucker for medieval monks, the beginnings of empirical inquiry, and murder mysteries all. The one trouble I had with it is that the author seemed a little too keen to impose modern ways of thinking on the characters. I mean, I like our modern way of thinking and it added to my enjoyment a bit ("only this one understands the true worth of our scientific thought!"), but this missed an opportunity for questioning the failures of such thought. I would've expected a postmodernist of all people to be interested in such a thing. Still a solid book.
