Loved it! But might not recommend it to everyone. The underlying plot of multiple murders at an abbey in the early 14th century was excellent, any murder mystery lover would enjoy it. But those murders and the accompanying investigation are set against a backdrop of unrest and division in the church which leads to many long conversations between monks about theological topics that may not keep everyone's attention. (It does make for one hilarious brawl scene at a dinner though!)
The setting, characters and pacing of the novel were all fantastic: Eco adds details to every page that really take the reader right into the life of the monks and the abbey. And be prepared, their life is not all pure piety like you'd imagine. : )
I listened to this book and I think that was a good choice: there was a lot of latin in the book , and many different accents and other languages. Just seeing those words on the page wouldn't have had the same impact as hearing the narrator read them.

3.5 I prefer historical fiction with a clear mystery or dark plot tangled with the long speeches and debates that make the genre popular. The name of the rose can be described vaguely as that. I’ll be honest, the latin parts annoyed me and sometimes took me out of the expirience, some characters where so over the top, but for the most part I was interested and the ending was perfect. The story on its own is worth it, but the history it contains turns this book into the modern classic we all have heard of.

No leo mucha ficción histórica religiosa por una razón, me dan flojera las largas conversaciones internas sobre la moral o los demonios o lo que sea que la gente de antes se pasara pensando. Cada año se me olvida y siempre termino leyendo algo y entonces me caigo mal porque no estoy prestándole la atención necesaria. Como cuando leí Los pilares de la tierra y sufrí poquitook mucho, y no quiero ni recordar Nuestra señora de Paris. Duele. Y es que hay muchas cosas que no puedo tomarme en serio siendo una mujer del siglo XXI.
"La bestia se pasea por la abadía..."
Pero aquí esta lo interesante sobre El nombre de la rosa, sabe perfectamente cuando ya te dio un montón de dialogo interno y entonces te sorprender con mucho misterio del bueno, conversaciones inteligentes o dramas perfectamente bien elaborados. Y al final, ese balance entre novela histórica y novela de crimen triunfa por sobre lo poco del género que ya he leído.
Hay mucha inteligencia detrás de cada párrafo escrito, una habilidad indiscutible, mucho talento. Pero como cada libro, si el tema no es de tu total interés, siempre le encontraras un pero. Aun así me da gusto leer autores que claramente escriben sobre lo que quieren y no lo que puede llegar a pegar, créanlo o no, pero eso se siente mientras pasas las páginas.
"Pero entonces vivimos en un sitio abandonado por Dios.
¿Acaso has conocido alguno en el que Dios se sintiese a sus anchas?”
No es un libro para pasar el rato, tiene pasajes sin traducir en varios idiomas incluyendo latín, ignoro si todas las ediciones no lo traduzcan o solo la que tengo yo, pero a mí me hubiera gustado saberlo antes de empezarlo a leer. Así que les dejo la aclaración.
