I have a rule that I have to finish every book I start. This book made me hate my self imposed rule! Every time I picked up this book, I whinged and moaned and cursed. This is one of the most pompous, self-important book I've ever read. The author seemed determine to display how much he knew rather than how the audience would enjoy it. I read dry history for Uni; I read historical fiction to bring some sparkle to the times of which I read. This book has no sparkle. The main character was okay but I couldn't give a sh*t about any other characters, whether they lived or died, or who was killing them. Some bits were clever but there was just so much tedium. I can't believe this book is so highly rated - I think by people who think they are the most intelligent people in the world. Give me a break!

About 75 pages too long, but other than that an amazing book (and meditation on the history Christianity and philosophy)
Ganz schön schwierig zu bewerten. Denn der Fall an sich war fantastisch. Aber an vielen Stellen hatte das Buch unfassbare Längen und das alte Kirchengeschwätz war kaum auszuhalten. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass hier der Film besser sein könnte als das Buch, wenn das Ganze irrelevante Palaver gekappt. Sehr schade, denn es hätte richtig spannend sein können.
Es una novela rica en temas, personajes y contexto. Con las disputas entre el emperador Ludovico y el papa Juan XXII en segundo plano. Las discusiones sobre la pobreza, la Inquisición, las profecías sobre el Anticristo y otros temas similares siriviendo de motivos para los personajes, se desarrolla la historia de Adso (un novicio) y Guillermo (un monje franciscano) en una Abadia italiana en la que ocurre una serie de crímenes e intrigas. Novela completa que envía al lector al diccionario, al traductor y a armarse de conocimientos históricos para comprenderla mejor.
Me faltó coraje para hurgar en las debilidades de los malvados, porque comprendí que son las mismas debilidades de los santos.
Nunca como en estos últimos años los predicadores han ofrecido al pueblo, para estimular su piedad y su terror... palabras tan truculentas, tan perturbadoras y tan macabras.
