Wow, what a novel!! I read some of the criticism and I think it is totally valid. However, for me personally it did not trouble me as much.
I initially read “The Name of the Rose” as it was once recommended during a lecturer as one of the best murder mysteries ever read. I haven’t read that many of those so I can’t say much about that, but I believe it is pretty well done! One of the best things about it is the atmosphere.. I mean a medieval monastery as a setting for a series of murders, a group of monks who all act kind of ominous, a library nobody is allowed to enter, secret passages, codes…? What isn’t there to love? All that is topped by the narrative voice of Adso of Melk and the investigative work by William of Baskerville (they truly resemble the dynamic of Sherlock and Watson but I liked that) to make a pretty good murder mystery.
Yet, there is so much more. The novel also discusses different philosophical and theological topics and gives insight into “politics” and historical background of the medieval Christian church—which I found super interesting. :)
4 stars!

I really enjoyed this read. I wouldn’t say it’s for everyone - its prose is deeply entrenched in the period and can be quite dense - but it is so different from other historical fiction that it was a breath of fresh air. Loved the characters, loved the mystery, loved the historical conflicts. Very well written!
