A challenging book, I learned much about theology, the 14th century Catholic church and it's struggle to hold onto it's power as Europe approached the Enlightenment. A book replete with philosophical musings, divine and base, nestled between (and entwined with!) a murder mystery, as the characters struggle with discovering truth in it's various forms.

DID NOT FINISH: 59%

I can't do the long explanations and expositions anymore. I'm talking 8 pages about a door. 10+ pages about minor religious group that I'm not even sure will be important later. I'm 350 pages in the ebook and not even 45% finished.

A brilliant mixture of historical fiction, murder mystery, philosophy, and theology. I was completely gripped by this book and couldn’t put it down.

A brilliant mix of murder mystery, medieval theology, and philosophical debate. The ideas are deep, and William of Baskerville is a fascinating protagonist. Some parts are heavy with theological discourse, but the payoff is worth it. A dark, intelligent novel about truth, power, and the dangers of forbidden knowledge.
