An incredibly solid debut and my second book by Cameron Johnston, he's great at writing anti-heros and dark humor.  It's gritty and gory and all around a brilliant fantasy, excited to get around to the second in the series.

This was a really fun read for the "Uncharted Realms Society" Bookclub on Fable. I didn't know a lot going into it but it was pretty good. I enjoyed learning about the Gifts and the Arcanum. I get some noir vibes while Edrin was investigating and that climax and ending make me so curious and wanting to learn more. Will likely continue the series

Nonstop fun and action, with revenge, gods and magic that feels like it has consequences

The first vibe I got from this was Lies of Locke Lamora, not so much the story, but the setting and the main character Edrin is a bit of a smart ass.

It's a fast read, and it makes you want to keep reading.  I loved how Edrin couldnt always just use magic to solve every problem due to magic leaving a scent as he was on the run for 10 years.

Near the end this book gets quite gorey, while I havent read any Lovecraft I feel like near the end if you like that you'll enjoy some of the encounters in the last half.

Im not good at selling something other than saying I loved it and that is how I feel here.  There is a sequel, but the book does end comfortably at a good spot.  I can tell there is more to come, but the main story of the book is finished.

Edrin is very fun and broken character, I wouldnt all him an anti-hero, but he is not your typical hero either.

Read the summary, it will do a better job at selling it than me, but check this book out, it's a lot of fun, fast (despite how long it took me to read due to life circumstances) and easy to read too!

Doing a soft DNF here because I feel like I should like this book but I just can’t stay in the story. I’ve had to repeat several chapters and still can’t tell you what the MC’s name is. I might try again later to see if anything sticks.

This book is told in info dumps and flashbacks.  This creates a particularly bad start to the book, and it carries on to a lesser extent, throughout.  I'm not invested and there's no tension because there's no characterization and no relationship building.  For a book that's focused on the action and the world building, not much is happening in the overall plot - he's just going here and there looking at clues, and whatever happens feels entirely lucky or aimless.  There are no clues provided to help the reader be engaged with solving the mystery.

The only part of this book I enjoyed was the incredibly climactic final battle - there's a lot of crazy and unique stuff happening, and everything that came before pays off.  Still, since the first 75% of this is a very slow read, this one part is not enough to make the book feel like anything other than a long, slow slog.

"A hazy light shone through walls of palpitating tissue. It was grotesque butchery, hacking an orifice deeper into the centre of the monster" (p. 273).

Dark, creepy, and filled with action, THE TRAITOR GOD is an adventure about what one man will do for revenge and his friends.

After a decade away and with some of his memories locked away, Edrin Walker returns home to find his best friend brutally murdered. Keen on getting revenge for his friend, Edrin must reunite with old friends and rivals, and face an enemy too horrible to consider.

Edrin was a good character. For all his talk about being a bastard, I actually enjoyed his line of thought and personality. He might not be the friendliest person, but he treated his actual friends with respect, for the most part. I loved the side characters, most of whom were strong, independent women.

The world building was interesting, though I did think there were a few places where it felt like too much to take in. Once the world was put aside and the plot was able to progress, I found myself really enjoying what I was reading. The ending is intense and filled with body horror, as this book does not shy away from blood or other bodily fluids.

If you are looking for a dark epic fantasy with morally grey characters and plenty of horror elements, THE TRAITOR GOD may just be for you!

The Traitor God was a really enjoyable read with a fantastic protagonist in Edrin Walker. He is a “peoplemancer” with the powers for the making of a tyrant. He may be morally gray, but even he has standards and holds himself back from going over the edge. But when his best friend is murdered after discovering a terrible secret, he may just have to let go in his pursuit of justice and vengeance.

The book actually reminded me a bit of The Lies of Locke Lamora. I would have actually liked to see more of the sequences set in the past because they showed a lot of promise and some great stories to tell. I found the first third of the book to be a bit slower than I would have liked, but it really ramps up once the set up is gotten out of the way. But by the time it reached the finale, it became truly epic in its scale and grandeur. The Traitor God delivers on the action and gore of modern fantasies as well as some hilarious quips from Walker.
