And at the end of the ride I'm glad I got on and I'm glad to be getting off...

This last installment was fine but nothing spectacular. Most of the books beyond 7 just felt like stories to be churned out without that earlier spark and whit that initially made them great.

Quotable Quotations 🗣 📢

"I'm glad I don't know everything, Dorothy, and that there still are things in both nature and in wit for me to marvel at."

"It is always wise to do one's duty, however unpleasant that duty may seem to be."

I loved this series as a little girl, reading the 6 books we did own, over and over and over. I found several of the other 14 that Baum wrote in a used book store a few years ago and have been meaning to dig into them for some time to see how they hold up. The style of writing is a bit dated and the characters are far too perfect and far too wonderful to each other, but it still managed to bring that sense of wonder and whismy that made me a fan of the fantasy genre. It made me happy to revisit Oz' s heroes again, in a place where good always conquers evil. Best of all, I was able to remember just how much joy my younger self did have reading about Dorothy's adventures in Oz.

i cant believe im done with the oz serious! :( i loved it so much i didnt want it to end..
u may think its a children's book but it's not.. it's for everyone who's young at heart.. a serious that is well loved and definitely recommended for ageless hearts..

I loved it. It was so feminist. I mean Glinda? Basically a princess scientist! And the story is still really interesting

Nice to see all the characters again, even if they didn’t do anything.

OMG I am finally done with these damn books (at least the ones by L. Frank Baum and those are the only ones I'm reading)! And this one was a lot better than the other ones. The first thing that startled me was the intelligent conversation that Ozma and Dorothy and Glinda were having. I think that was a first. Also, it was a really compelling storyline. Ozma finds out about a war brewing between the mountainous flatheads and the lake-dwelling Skeezers, and feels it's her responsibility to make peace between them and inform these backwoods people that she's their ruler.

This doesn't go well. The Su-Dic of the Flatheads tries to imprison them, and the Queen of the Skeezers does imprison them, then lowers the dome-covered city to the bottom of the lake, trapping them there when she goes and gets herself turned into a swan by the Su-Dic. No one knows how to reverse her magic, or get the city up above the water again. There's three adepts at magic that were turned into fish that once ruled over the land until the Queen stole their magic and changed them to fish. The Emerald City rescue party lead by the Wizard hopes to find the fish and restore the adepts, thus being able to have them raise the city and rescue their friends and punish the Flatheads.

I was really entertained, and glad the books ended with such a good story. Also, the patchwork girl of Oz aka "Scraps" is by far one of the most entertaining characters in the series.

3.5
adventurous lighthearted

After a number of disappointingly random or repetitive stories I find this is one of the stronger entries in the series. There is a solid reason for the characters to go on a journey -- trying to bring peace between warring peoples -- even if one wonders why the all-powerful Ozma took so long to become aware of this, and why when she gets there her magic turns out to be so useless. But never mind, if she really was all knowing and all powerful there would never be any Oz stories at all.
