The fourteenth and final Oz book to be completely written by L. Frank Baum. I'll be ready for a bit of an Oz break after we finish book 15 (based on Baum's notes). I would probably have enjoyed this more if I'd had a bit of a breathing space beforehand, but we're trying to finish reading the series aloud before our big Oz party in August. There were some neat ideas in this one, and we get to meet yet more unusual Oz denizens.
One weird thing: the original manuscript featured Red Reera as a wired-together skeleton with red eyes burning in its skull. What the heck, Baum?? He changed Red Reera to a gray ape in an apron for the printed manuscript because, hey, why not? Less trauma for the kiddos, his editors probably thought.

This is the last book that L. Frank Baum wrote in its entirety. And if I’m being honest, in the case of this series, I don’t think that is a bad thing. This series had ran its course, the term ‘scrapping the barrel’ could be used. Wasn’t that keen on this final addition. 3/5

Wow what a way to end this after fourteen books. And finally we see more of the iconic glinda in fact she gets her own starring role in this story. Brilliant
I truly enjoyed the complete series of OZ.
Its a shame they only had 14 books :)

Mi aspettavo qualcosa di diverso dall'ultimo libro, ma non per questo ne sono rimasta delusa. La storia mi è piaciuta moltissimo e la trama è stata costruita in modo intelligente. Forse avrei preferito che il libro si concentrasse più sui personaggi già conosciuti (magari in festeggiamenti e racconti di storie passate) che su nuovi personaggi, per quanto siano interessanti. Sono rimasta affascinata dai nuovi posti descritti e mi ha fatto piacere scoprire più cose sulle regole magiche di Oz. Si conclude qui l'avventura e nonostante sia triste, è giunta l'ora perché la serie è stata portata avanti fra troppi alti e bassi e questo è un buon capitolo con cui concludere il tutto.
I was expecting something different from the last book, but I was not disappointed. I like the story and the plot was carried on in an intelligent way. I would have preferred the book to focus on the old characters (maybe all of them celebrating something and telling each other past adventures) rather than on new ones, even if they were interesting. I was fascinated by the new places and I was happy to discover more about the laws of Oz and its magic. So the adventures came to an end and even if I'm, I know it's time cause the series was brought on through ups and downs and this is a good installment to finish the adventures.

Glinda of Oz is the last book in the series that was actually written by the original author. Since it was published posthumously, it was the one book aside from the very first book in the series, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to have no author's note. That actually hit me hard because I know any continuation by another author will never be the same.
During the time of writing, Baum was ill and it showed when his original manuscript actually depicted Reera the Red as a skeleton with red eyes. He likely changed it to a more comical image after the advice by his editors. The thought that Baum still managed to bring us all to another great adventure at the end of his life is just touching to me.
I loved how in his last book, Baum in a way brought the adventure underwater. The adventures in Oz have always taken place on land and once up in the air so I appreciate that he completed it with water at the end. Despite writing in bad health, he managed to maintain the quality of his writing. Like the previous book though, Glinda of Oz was a little shorter than the rest.
I wanted to give this a solid five, but I don't know, it felt a little sad and helpless in a way. Like how the immortality of those in Oz kept being mentioned and how a fairy, a wizard and a sorceress could still have no power to break a specific spell. I felt like it spoke of the condition that Baum was in and I loved it for that but I didn't expect to end on a bittersweet note because the rest pretty much gave me quite a sweet ride.

Some really good moments in this one! I can't believe that the whole Oz series ends "Which proves that it is always wise to do one's duty, however unpleasant that duty may seem to be" which is neither emblematic of the particular adventure or the series as a whole. A more apt summary is This proves it is always in the end useful and fun to f*ck around and find out, no matter whether there's potentially dangerous aspects.
