i don't love marriage in trouble books, but i really liked Sarah and Caleb in OOAL, so i wanted to give their story a try!
some scattered thoughts:
- the rekindling of their romance was sweet; it was clear how much they cared for each other, and i enjoyed seeing them out of their element in the woods.
- i found it a bit hard to sympathize with Sarah, and i think it was heightened because Caleb's character was basically perfect. their troubles were less something being wrong with their marriage and more like Sarah was having an existential crisis and took it out on Caleb. i did appreciate seeing Sarah's growth though, and her emotions and internal struggles were relatable.
- maybe i just don't like dual timelines, but the flashbacks did not feel necessary for this book. only maybe like one or two of those chapters actually added something new to the story, but even those scenes could have been worked into the present plot. the past timeline just felt like we were going through the motions of seeing their high school romance, and it just wasn't the most interesting.
overall, i liked certain elements of this book, and the writing was solid, but it just didn't charm me like OOAL did!
