This book didn’t have the same kind of cohesive main plot thread in the way previous books did, but almost felt like a collection of anecdotes and stories from their life in the colonies. While the structure was a little different, I found it still very enjoyable. My favorite moments in these books are the little hilarious moments and the silly, non life threatening problems they navigate, and the insightful and philosophical conversations they have, especially Claire & Jamie. I think it felt like a relief after the very tumultuous drama of books 3 & 4. I want to say this book is more “peaceful” but at the same time what I would call one of the top 5 most horrible things that’s happened to a character in this series happened in this book, so do with that what you will lol. Somehow Claire and Jamie’s relationship continues to be the most interesting relationship in every book and I never get tired of their poignant yet hilarious conversations.
Iconic moments include Jamie scheming to get the babies baptized when the priest gets arrested and Jamie asking Claire to give his sperm “a decent burial” after showing them to him under her microscope lmao

Not my favorite of the series so far, but definitely better than Voyager or whatever the third one is called lol. Roger's character development was truly beautiful, and I am very excited to see him grow and change even further. I think the next book is where I catch up with what I've seen of the show, so I am looking forward to that.

I am not sure what the purpose and point of this book was. Don't get me wrong; I absolutely loved the first 3 books. However, I feel like the 4th and 5th book is leading to the revolutionary war, but taking a very very long time to get there. Why is this book 1400 pages long? What is the climax of this story? It seemed to drone on and on and could have been a lot shorter, or even have been eliminated. They went through the whole book and yet still haven't really finished the Stephen Bonnet story?

I am confused, but hope the next one gets better.

If this had been the first book in the Outlander series, I wouldn’t have kept reading the series. In fact, I may not have finished the book, though I’m loathe to abandon books. This installment just seemed dull to me. I still love the characters and I still want to know what happens to them, and I will keep reading the books, but there’s no denying this one was a pretty disappointing read.

I will continue with the Outlander series because I love the characters, the writing, and the rich period details. But man this book was a slog to get through at times. I thought I would never finish it. Ms. Gabaldon must get paid by the word. Fewer details about babies' diapers and breastfeeding would have been nice.
