This book reminded me that the consequences of colonization/forced displacement do reverberate through generations. It was painful to read how the people closest to Yara denied her emotions and failed of give her the love and companionship she craved. It was powerful to follow her journey to become the mother and person she wanted to be. I won’t forget this story for a long time.

I truly enjoyed this book, not my regular genre to read or style but honestly it was what I needed at this time in my life. Of course I am not stating I relate to this, but as a woman oh Hispanic descent I feel like there are things I should do should’ve done for my family there are things that I have done for my family and for others. And so much happened in my life that I’m still trying to work through and the generation trauma. The writing was so beautiful and partially how I felt as well in some cases but didn’t have the words to articulate it. This helped me realize a lot as well for myself as I and a 25 year old woman, I do not have kids nor a partner, I feel behind in life but honestly I feel more me everyday as I learn about myself and work through my own experiences. I really enjoyed this book, I didn’t know what I was going into I knew nothing about this book but it definitely shows and goes into an inner dialogue of a woman trying to manage everything between her religion and family and upbringing and watching her parents and her mom. That one hit me a bit harder. But it was a beautiful story and I enjoyed it and would recommend it especially anyone who’s struggling too, it’s not a self help book but definitely an eye opening novel.
