I never saw the ending to this book! So many twists and turns. A very messed up family with lots of Dark secrets.
i can't decide how to rate--the story line was great but sometimes felt convoluted.
Great ending! It kept me guessing the whole time-unable to tell how reliable the narrator was. I do think the multiple point of views is being a little overdone right now but it had it’s worth for this book. I enjoyed every second I was reading it.
I got this in my Book of the Month box back in September and was immediately interested in picking it up, especially after I heard the audiobook was really well done. I managed to listen to this in just a day because it was so engaging and I wanted to know what was going to happen. Also, I looooved the audiobook narrators, which made it even easier to keep listening to this one.
So this book is about Cass and Emma, two sisters who grew up in an incredibly dysfunctional family. One night, when Emma is 17 and Cass is 15, both girls disappear and are not heard from again. Until 3 years later when Cass shows up on her mother's doorstep begging them to find Emma. Soon after, the FBI shows up and Cass tells the story of the night she and her sister disappeared. Through the course of the story, the FBI are trying to figure out if Cass is telling the truth. And if so, what they need to do to find Emma and bring her home.
This book is told in a dual POV. Part of the story is told from Cass's perspective and it is told in 1st person. The other half of the story is told from the POV of Abby Winter, the FBI agent assigned to the case, and her section is told in 3rd person. I'll be honest and say that I didn't really understand why one character was told in 1st person and the other in 3rd, but I did like that we got to see from two different characters that had completely different stakes in the mystery at hand.
Also, this book is a mystery/thriller story, there is a mystery aspect to it. But I'd say it's really more of a character study. And for that reason, it has a very literary feel to it. I like thrillers and this is definitely unlike any thriller I've ever read. And honestly, it kept me guessing. I had no idea what was going to happen or what had happened. Every time I did have to stop listening, I was so eager to get back to it. That's probably why I finished it in just one day.
This is one of those thrillers that I can't really tell you much about. It'll be so much better if you just pick this up and uncover the mystery along with the characters. I really really enjoyed it. I'm glad I selected this one from BOTM and I am glad I picked it up so quickly. If you like thrillers, you should definitely pick this one up. You won't be disappointed!

This book was fantastic! It kept me interested every step of the way. I wouldn't say that it's a thriller so much, it's more about the psychology of the main character and her family, but there is still a compelling mystery at the heart of the story. The narration is fascinating and it flips everything around on you when you aren't expecting it. Even the parts you think you can predict come out much different than you expect.
Graphic: Child abuse, Confinement, Death, Domestic abuse, Emotional abuse, Toxic relationship, Kidnapping, Pregnancy
Moderate: Adult/minor relationship, Drug use, Sexual content, Blood, Murder, Gaslighting, Abandonment
Minor: Incest, Infertility, Rape, Grief
2/5. This was just Ok. Definitely forgettable and not impactful. I was bored through most of this, and it took me FOREVER to read (which is not the case in a good thriller). I saw the end twist(s) coming and predicted the ending. Overall, not impressed...

Another brilliant book! I loved it.
When Emma and Cass disappear, there is a full on investigation to find them. With police unable to find anything, it is all just rumours and conspiracies. Three years later, Cass returns. She has one detailed and interesting story to tell, but is her story as true as it seems?
Beautifully written, keeping you guessing the whole time. While I had a feeling something was off, I had no idea that the ending would happen.

You know the phrase “Trust no one”, right? Yes well, with Emma in the Night this rule applies times ten. Unreliable narrators are one thing (and personally a favorite of mine) but what do you do when the entire book is full of people who are completely unreliable? You buckle up and get ready for a fun ride. I hope y’all ain’t allergic to whiplash!
I really liked Emma in the Night way more than I had initially thought I would. There were a couple of points where I didn’t think I’d like the book. Especially revelations came to light I thought it would end up sloppy and unfinished but in whole- the book really surprised me. It might come across that it’s sloppy but really there was a point to the disguise. There was a point to everything.
The twists and the turns and the constant pulls in multiple directions were my most favorite part of the book. Just when you thought it was going one way, the author did a phenomenal job at side tracking you with something else and then you go back to the other thing with a NEW revelation. (Mind you- all of my revelations were wrong so...LOL that was fun).
The writing was normal. It wasn’t anything special or out of this world but the author did a great job at piecing together a story with multiple twists. Sure, it could have been executed better but she did her job and I was satisfied.
The ending surprised me. It honestly did. I thought of a couple of ways that it could have gone and was quite surprised when I seen the way it actually went. Some of the loose ends weren’t tied up but it wasn’t huge ones so I wasn’t bothered as bad.
It wasn’t a perfect book. So, just don’t have that expectation. But it was a good book that kept me on my toes, always had me guessing, and turning pages like it was my job.

Such a compelling book!!
If you like your stories with clear protagonists and antagonists, and your plots to reveal everything to you in a truthful way, this book may not be for you. This book left me guessing, coming up with conspiracy theories, becoming a little armchair psychologist, biting my fingernails to stubs, and eating up every page. Almost dissecting every page, every interaction.
Loved it.
