Emma in the Night

This book was just meh for me. Not horrible, not good. I hated the lack of dialogue, it really made the book drag by for me. The book did not thoroughly pick up until the very end. However, I can say that I did not see the ending coming.

I would rather give it a 3.5 but since I can't I'll give it a 3. I saw this as a recommendation on tiktok and thought why not read it. Personally, I found it went too slow and dragged on a bit at the beginning. things didn't start to clear up for me until about the 17th chapter. The most frustrating part was probably reading from Cass's point of view because it was all over the place sometimes.

3.5

EMMA IN THE NIGHT fulfilled THREE challenges I’m trying to keep up with this year. It’s a backlist title for #, a #BOTMgetsread and #theunreadshelfproject prompt for March. GO ME!

Emma in the Night was my first ever #BOTM and I’m not quite sure why it sat so long. I decided to pair it with the audiobook from @libro.fm and highly recommend it. The audio is narrated by Julia Whelan (one of my favorites). My husband caught me listening and following along in the book one night and had a good chuckle. I don’t often do that but I feel like I retain a bit more from an especially complex scene in the book so I’ll do what I want.

Emma in the Night was not what I expected but I really enjoyed it. Talk about dysfunctional family, the Martin family is it. I found it a bit odd that the daughters would all their mother Mrs. Martin. It threw me off a bit as I listened but in the end the detachment makes sense. This was definitely a heavier book than I prepared myself for. For some reason I just cannot seem to avoid those these days.

“The need to love and be loved but then knowing that everyone you could ever trust could betray you.”

Its quite a sad thought to know that anyone and everyone can betray you. I prefer to live in the world of ignorance and bliss myself. How about you?

DNF. This started off really interesting and strong and then took a 90 degree angle and became monotonous. I’m sure if I persevered with it it would come right but it didn’t grab me enough to want to continue.

I had three major problems with this book
1. This story is 100% ALL TELL AND NO SHOW the whole story is just Cass telling others what happened. Why didn’t I see her life on the island? That would have been a million times more interesting.
2. Cass reminds me of a piece of white bread. Boring and plain. Emma would have been an interesting character to read about but noooo, we just get to hear about her conflicting feelings and morally gray actions that would have really made me interested in the story.
3. I HATE when authors use pregnancy and death as a plot twist/device like, it’s the oldest, cheapest trick in the book. PLEASE JUST BE MORE CREATIVE.

DNF - really an unbearable read. I felt like the story was being told at me through the stories of Cass and the detectives rather that the author showing me the plot. Also, don’t take a drink every time a narcissism implication is laid out in this book. In general this was just all over the place.

Quick, page turner, thriller with some good twists. Fantastic summer read!
