This book was ... something. I liked parts of it and I was invested enough to read it all the way through and yet ... I was just left with a "that's it?" feeling. The synopsis does not do the crazy in this book justice. It is NEXT LEVEL and many times I found myself saying WTF is going on?!?! Also, our main girl Cass: she needs some serious therapy and her mother! Yikes! She's like Mommy Dearest yet scarier somehow. The book is not scary but is horrific in its depiction of the emotional and psychological warfare that was going on behind closed doors. The things this so-called family did to each other. It's not really surprising things turned out how they did.
We do ultimately find out what has happened to Emma and Cass and where they had been for the past 3 years. There was a twist (I'm not sure it can really be called that) that really surprised me and one that I saw coming. It didn't hurt the story because I wasn't sure how that would play out.
This is a low 3 for me because there was just so much going on and part of that toom away from the story ans it just felt like it took FOREVER to get to the resolution. There's one phrase that was repeated several times in the book that I feel is definitely true: People believe what they want to believe.

I could start a drinking game for all the times she said alter ego.
The end picked up a bit but I still didn’t love this book. I did have to trudge through most of it. If you are not sure, I would skip it.

Rating: 3/5
TW: Child Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Mental Illness, Rape & Sexual Assault
* This was a book club pick. I hadn't heard of it and borrowed it from the library.
* Unfortunately this one fell very flat for me. It was an average read at best. It's a very slow burn and I prefer a much faster pace. I kept going because it had a small pull on me. It wasn't going anywhere but I knew it had to eventually and I had absolutely no idea where it would be going. The ending just wasn't redeemable for me though.
* I would recommend borrowing over buying.
* Cass and Emma live in a split home and toxic environment. One night, both girls disappear. No trace of them and it haunts Dr Winters (Abby) for many years. Until, Cass reappears on her mothers doorstep.
* Cass is on a mission, prove her sanity and save her sister.
* Abby is on her own mission. Save the girls and find closure.
* What unravels is a slow burn tale that leaves us guessing, will Emma be saved and how did Cass escape?
* Overall: This sounded so promising but for me ended up being fairly average. That is just my opinion though and if slow burns are your thing, this might be one for you!

This was such a great book! I was looking for every chance I could get to read it. One of my favorite genres is thrillers with twists that take me by surprise at the end and this book executed it so well. The end was such a satisfying conclusion too.
I really enjoyed the story and plot line of this book. It had me on the edge of my sit and I couldn't put it down. The story didn't turn out the way I thought it would.
